Additional Information Regarding the Redevelopment Planning Study

Greetings Fernley Residents:

Several residents have expressed questions and/or concerns regarding redevelopment. We would like to take this opportunity to ask our residents to please read through this post in its entirety.

The City is currently conducting a redevelopment study, this is a preliminary phase. A redevelopment agency has not been created. The City is exploring and reviewing this option, utilizing the expertise of the University of Nevada, Reno Center for Economic Development to assist in this initial phase with the collection of data, and to facilitate the community workshops. Once this study has been completed (including feedback from the community workshops), the Council will then decide to move forward (or not) with a redevelopment agency.

Some residents have expressed questions/concerns as to how the public has been included in the process thus far. In 2015, the City began working on a new Strategic Plan. Four public workshops were conducted during the strategic planning process, they were held at City Hall on:
• Saturday, November 7, 2015; 9:00am to 4:30pm - Strategic Planning Workshop No. 1
• Saturday, January 23, 2016; 9:00am to 2:30pm - Strategic Planning Workshop No. 2
• Friday, February 26, 2016; 4:00pm to 8:00pm - Strategic Planning Workshop No. 3
• Saturday, July 30, 2016; 10:00am to 4:00pm - Strategic Planning Workshop No. 4
• Thursday, April 7, 2016; 6:00pm to 8:00pm - Redevelopment Workshop

The public participants who attended the strategic planning workshops arrived to a consensus that the City should explore redevelopment. Therefore, as a result of the public input, the current redevelopment study is part of the City’s implementation of the strategic plan. In addition, there were several other items that were received by the City Council during publicly noticed and open City Council meetings. These items include, the Fernley one-page strategic plan summary; the complete strategic plan; the redevelopment planning study request for proposal; and the preliminary financial and economic redevelopment feasibility study. For links to each of these documents, please refer to the bottom of this post.

The City would again like to emphasize there will be six upcoming public workshops regarding redevelopment that property owners will be invited to and encouraged to participate and attend. The City will do our absolute best to schedule these workshops on evenings and weekends, to accommodate residents who are unable to attend during the workday. We are relying on our residents to attend, engage, and share your thoughts!

The City is excited to hear from so many citizens, and we are hoping to strengthen citizen participation in the future. We welcome your questions, concerns, and feedback! Lastly, please be sure (if you are not already) to follow the City’s Facebook page and/or webpage (www.cityoffernley.org). While we do appreciate the various social media pages throughout Fernley, you will find the most accurate and up to date and information on the City’s Facebook page. Thank you for taking the time to read through this post in its entirety, please feel free to share! We are happy to answer your questions, please contact the City Manager’s Office at 775-784-9851.
