At the Fernley City Council meeting of November 19, 2007, the Mayor and City Council announced that the Mayor and Council will be soliciting applications to fill a vacant Council seat. Ward 1 Councilman Charles Shepperd has submitted his resignation from the seat effective December 3, 2007. His departure creates a vacancy on the five-member City Council.
Pursuant to NRS 266.225, Fernley City Council and the Mayor must fill the vacancy at the December 5, 2007 Council meeting. NRS 266.215 requires councilmen must be qualified electors within their respective cities, bona fide residents thereof for a period of at least one (1) year and qualified electors within their respective wards. Candidates must be 18 years of age and registered voter living within the corporate limits of the City of Fernley. Furthermore, pursuant to NRS, the term of this appointment begins December 5, 2007 through approximately January 2, 2009, whereas the remainder of the term is refilled subject to the primary and general election procedures of 2008.
Selection of the applicants will be conducted by the Mayor and City Council at the City Council meeting on December 5, 2007. Applicants are requested to prepare and present a no longer than three (3) minute oral introductory presentation about themselves to the council and public, followed by a no longer than five (5) minute time allotment to answer five standard questions prepared by the City Manager and volunteer panel. Thereafter, the Mayor and Council member will each ask one question of each applicant. At the conclusion of all applicant presentations, the Mayor and City Council will consider the appointment. After the motion is made and approved to appoint, the appointee will be sworn in and immediately fill the Ward One Seat to participate in the remainder of the City Council meeting.
Persons interested in being considered for appointment to the vacancy must submit a letter of interest and completed application to the City Manager’s office no later than November 30, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. Applications may be picked up in person from the City Manager’s office in City Hall or the form can be downloaded from the City’s website. The form should be filled out completely and returned to the City Manager’s office by the November 30, 2007, 4:00 pm deadline.
