The City has had an exclusive waste franchise agreement with Waste Management for residential, commercial, and industrial customers for many years (including many years with Lyon County before City incorporation in 2001).
During the last year there were many City Council meetings devoted to developing a new waste collection franchise, including determining that coverage will be mandatory for all residential properties, except for properties larger than 2 acres.
On November 5th of this year, the award of franchise process began with the City Council's initial selection of TRASHPROS for residential customers. At that time the the City Council also determined that commercial and industrial service will be open to competition with companies applying for non-exclusive franchises.
Since that time, City staff has been working on all of the doucments needed for a proper transition, including working with TRASHPROS and Waste Management. The effective date of the new 10 year exclusive residential waste franchise is January 5th, 2009.
